Chutes & Ladders: A Comedy & Variety Show Benefit for Lurie Children’s Hospital
Laughter is the best medicine. Chicago is known for comedy, and this holiday season Chicago’s comedy community would like to be known for the games kids can play just as much as the games comedian’s play on stage. This Monday, December 3, Studio BE (3110 North Sheffield Ave.) will host an evening to help raise funds to buy board games for the children and families of children facing illness at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Many of these children and their families spend weeks in the hospital while they and their brothers or sisters face life threatening illnesses or injuries. This night is designed to purchase board games for those kids.
Over ten acts will make up this special night of entertainment featuring improv, sketch, standup, dance, magic, and music from Second City, DePaul, iO, The Annoyance, and many more. In true variety form; this show will have something for everyone.
The event’s organizer, Kate Henrikson, moved to Chicago in 2010 to study comedy at Second City and iO. She is a volunteer at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and despite the new digs for some of the best care in the world for children, there is something missing from the brand new building at 225 E Chicago Avenue: games for kids to play. A brand new hospital is a great thing for a child’s care, but kids need entertainment too. When it comes to a hospital’s budget, there’s really no line item for “Monopoly.” A dollar spent on medicine, an IV, or a doctor is considered well spent—but it’s hard to justify a check made to Milton Bradley. This night seeks to stock a toy chest with Battleship, Bananagrams, Settlers of Catan, Clue, Scrabble, and many more games to entertain and educate.
Tickets are only $5 and proceeds will go directly to purchase games for kids at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital.
